Reimagining appliance user interaction
Responding to the rapid evolution of touch user interfaces, General Electric set out to revolutionize how users interacted with their Monogram line of high-end wall ovens.
When developing two double wall oven concepts for touch screen interfaces, I researched where General Electric’s competitors were moving with their designs. In many ways they were simply translating physical button interfaces onto touch screens. Reimagining the interfaces around the new touch screen’s unique capabilities would provide GE with a differentiation. General Electric could offer not only customized interfaces that fit user personal preferences and interior decor, they could also see an increase in efficiency. When setting out to design the new user experiences, I looked to strike a balance between efficiency and familiarity. Two designs were delivered. One provided a clear unification of the physical LED panel, while the other provided a friendly interface that mimics the circular shape of a user’s fingerprint.
